Seasonal Measures for Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs (BMSB)

Dear Valued Customers,

To safeguard Australia from the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) has amended its fumigation regulations. These revised measures will be enforced annually from September 1st to April 30th (inclusive) and are applicable to all targeted goods exported and transhipped to Australia from designated risk countries.

1) What is the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) (Halyomorpha halys) is an insect that is exotic to Australia and considered a seasonal hitchhiker pest.
They may arrive on cargo of all kinds, but commonly hidden in and around machinery and vehicles and on/in sea containers from risk countries.

2) Target Risk Countries (exports from):

*Emerging risk countries; subject to random onshore inspections

3) Target Commodities

Details of the goods targeted by these measures are available via this link.

4) Target Period:

Annually, targeted goods manufactured in and/or shipped from target risk countries to Australia between September 1st and April 30th (inclusive).

5) Treatment Requirements

Mandatory treatment types and requirements are available for reference here.

6) Responsibilities of the Merchant

Merchants are responsible for ensuring their shipments adhere to regulations. Non-compliant shipments may be returned to their origin or rerouted for transshipment and fumigation, with all associated expenses chargeable to the merchants. Ocean Network Express (ONE) does not assume responsibility for monitoring shipments for BMSB compliance.
